Title: The Most Selfish Man
Rating/Warnings: PG13, AU Children of Earth
Length: 396 words
Summary: for the comment_fic prompt Jack/Ianto, Ianto does die in Thames House, however Jack, using the power of the Bad Wolf, makes Ianto immortal and a fixed point in time like him.

The Most Selfish Man

Ianto is alive when they come searching for bodies in Thames House. He doesn’t move until they lift Jack – one man with hands under his upper arms and another getting a hold under his knees – and then he follows them down the stairs. He doesn’t talk, he doesn’t respond to suggestions or orders, he just follows them down the stairs to the largest room where he sits on the floor and leans back against the wall, tucking his knees up to his chin.

People mutter about shock and miracles. Someone drapes a red blanket around his shoulders.

He’s the only live body in the room with a red blanket. The rest are laid out in rows, ever so neatly, like a war cemetery or the new filing cabinets Ianto bought for the Archives a few weeks ago. Every single one of them still and lifeless, even the one Ianto never takes his eyes off.

“He hasn’t woken up yet then?” says Gwen quietly, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.

When Ianto doesn’t reply she adjusts his blanket, pats his shoulder, and then arranges for (or lies to) the authorities to let them leave with Jack’s body – Rhys wheeling him out on a trolley, Gwen helping him manhandle Jack onto the backseat, and Ianto following.

“What’s up with him then?” says Rhys, watching Ianto as they squeeze into the car. “Don’t worry, mate,” he continues without waiting for any kind of answer, “Jack’ll be fine, yeah? He’ll be up and about in a bit.”

Ianto just sits in the backseat, Jack’s head resting in his lap and a red blanket around his shoulders.

“It doesn’t usually take this long,” Gwen mutters to her husband as she slides into the front passenger seat. “Only when something’s taken a lot out of him, but this. I dunno.” She leans towards him and lowers her voice further still, but Ianto can still hear her when she says, softly, “And Ianto still alive when Jack isn’t? Jack must have done something. Probably something stupid.”

“Jack being stupid?” Rhys turns the key in the ignition. “Now there’s a surprise.”

“Jones, Ianto Jones,” says Jack, his tear-damp face against Ianto’s. “More than a blip in time.”

He pulls back and his face swims into view, hovering overhead.

“I am the most selfish man alive, did you know that?”

Then Jack kisses him.

Title: The More Things Change
Rating/Warnings: PG13
Length: 424 words
Summary: for the comment_fic prompt The Independents won the Battle of Serenity.

The More Things Change

Mal takes to the stars, because they may have won but there’s still no home left for him to go back to. He’s sown the field of battle with the bodies and blood of his men and he hasn’t the heart to sow things worth growing.

Zoe follows after, because she was never one to be tied to dirt anyhow. People, though, she’s tied herself to them without ever meaning to and most are dead and gone, but not Malcolm Reynolds and she’d like to see it stay that way.

Kaylee’s a girl who gets an opportunity. Doesn’t matter what happened when she was too young to know about it, far away and distant, winners or losers there’s an opportunity that comes her way and she’s good with taking those.

Wash finally gets released from a prisoner of war camp run by the Alliance, but there’s some confusion over whose side he was really on, because the paper trail says that he was in an Independent’s POW camp before that, and flying medical supplies to the Alliance before that and no one has the time or inclination to sort it out. Wars are messy and they leave mess behind them, but Wash just wants to fly, plain and simple; it’s just a matter of who’ll take him.

Jayne’s not the type to follow rules, whoever’s making them. An Independent society means he’s got the chance to go his own way, but for all he hates the rules life’s easier when you’ve got someone to follow, someone who’ll do the planning, and Mal’s good with that, so good he helped to win a war.

Inara wonders if there will be a place for Companions in this new ‘verse, but she doesn’t wait to find out. They say that now people can be as they are, so as long as she says that she’s a Companion then she will be, however separate from a Guild that may disband, owner of herself, until she can figure out what comes next.

Book believes that now is as good a time as any to see the worlds. It’s a matter of time: the Abbott says that he’s ready and who is he to disagree?

Serenity is where they all end up, because that’s where they were headed. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Simon saves lives. He reattaches a girl’s leg and she names her hamster after him.

River dances. There is time and space yet for her to grow into whoever she will be.

Oh wow this is fantastic! I especially loved Zoe's one, about being tied to Mal. That was so lovely! <3

If he could do it, I can absolutely see Jack being that selfish, and damn if it wouldn't be completely understandable if probably also unforgivable. Nicely done.

And oh, what an amazing glimpse at what would(n't) change if the Independents had won. You have a real way of putting tons and tons of characterization across with an elegant economy of words.

I can see you weren't kidding about tracking down my other fics *is flattered and grinning a lot*.

Yep, I think Jack could do it and I'd be unforgivable, but I'd feel sorry for him all the same. Bah. I can't make my mind up if Ianto would forgive him or if it would be a step too far beyond everything else Jack has done even in his eyes.

Wow, thank you! :D

I really wasn't! LOL

Hope it's not too stalkerish.

I think Ianto would forgive him eventually, considering he has such a long eventually to work with now, but it's definitely interesting to ponder what that process might look like.

I am a-okay with the stalking lol.

Yeah, I can see Ianto wanting to sort the whole 456 problem first and being cold with Jack during it but dealing, and then there'd be a period of distance and maybe he'd even take a turn at running off with the Doctor...if Jack woke up, of course *evil grin*.
