newbie on AO3 and some fic questions
I am on AO3! HERE. HUGE thanks to dictator_duck! I don’t get how the invites work, but I appreciate that there have been floods of people moving to AO3. Fair enough that they want to manage that and make sure the site still works properly in the face of it. Still, I was down on the waiting list to get an account in February. February. This is lot sooner than February, yay!

Of course now it’s organisation time *grins*. So my few Avengers fics are going over there, because it’s apparently the place to go for shawarma these days. I don’t know about everything else though. I’ll probably move my most recent stuff and the ones that I’m pleased with, but some of them…

I decided ages ago that once I posted a story I wasn’t going to change it. Sure, I look back and cringe sometimes, but when I get daunted by how amazing other people’s writing is or I get frustrated with my own I can look back and say, hey, yeah, but I’ve improved. The proof is there for me to see. But when deciding what stories to move across to a new place, then, I don’t know whether to just move the whole lot or just a selection that I think are okay.

What have other people been doing? Are there any stories of mine you would particularly like to see on AO3? Thoughts?

I wouldn’t change any of my stories, but I think if ever I were to rewrite one it would be the first Harry Potter fic I posted online: The List. I wrote a fair amount before that, but that was the first fic where I wanted to make a point and where I think I actually managed to. It’s my most reviewed story on ff.net and still gets new reviews every so often, so I guess some people agree *grins*. It could be better written though and I think it would deserve the update.

What do you lot think of your earlier stories? Any you would consider changing or rewriting?

One thing I would suggest... use the days date you post and not earlier so that it doesn't post weird.

Also, if you know of other people that need invites, let me know. I think I have some.

Oops, I've already backdated what I've posted. Does this not work out so well?

I haven't heard of anyone that's after one, but I'll point them in your direction if I do :)

It just makes the fic very very sad because you don't get any of the pretty hits from the hit counter. It won't appear in the time lines as a new fic but will be put back in that original date. I know it seems pathetic to care about hits but I have a couple of hits that I backdated when I first put them on and they only have 5 hits and it makes me feel bad for them.

Hits are okay. Kudos and comments are better ;) But to be honest I wanted to be on AO3 for the bookmarking feature. I've been reading and trying to keep track of way too many fics on AO3 and this is going to make it easier. Plus I can leave actual kudos instead of guest kudos. This too makes me happy!

And I'd love to see all of them! AO3 is much easier to read on my phone but I can also download them on to my Kindle for those times that I might not be able to get wifi or satellite signal.

As a means of organization, I love AO3. It's a dream come true and exactly what I was looking for. I like them so much that I give them money! One of my mottos is Put Your Money Where Your Love Is! I just like what they do and what they stand for and what they have the potential to do.

I hope you like them just as much! It's not a site for everyone but I love it.

Aww <3

This makes sense. I usually only go online on my laptop. I think AO3 makes reading longer fics way easier though and I love that they can be downloaded, and so easily with that too.

I am on my way to being converted *grins* although I still like LJ more for the community and the chatting and my friends page. AO3 is a really shiny archive though :D

Oh, I'll never give up LJ. I tried. It didn't work! I moved over to Dreamwidth but all the fun is still over here so I stuck around!

As an archive, AO3 is top-notch! I hope you have fun there!

I have fic that I wrote when I was 15/16 that I'm completely embarrassed by now, yet I still have it on my AO3. I think I also have right in the summary that I wrote it when I was 15/16, and that it's in no way, shape, or form, how I write now.

I also have a Being Human story that I would like to finish before I transfer it over to AO3, but it's driving me mad and I would honestly prefer to tear apart what I have and rewrite it before I finish it at the moment. It's currently on my "list of fics to write" list and I keep shoving it to the bottom. I think I need a push to finish it.

By the way, how's the beta work on my Bruce/Natasha fic going? ;)

I have those. I also feel awkward when I think about posting all the short and flash fics I've done, for comment_fic and what have you. I think because I see AO3 as a place where there's lots of long fic.

So many stories I have in limbo. I feel your pain.

AHA! I can actually say it's done and should be in your inbox. OH YEAH :D

Oooh lucky! I'm on the waiting list, should get an invite end of August apparently, so not too long to wait. (It was November to start with - moving forwards!) I'm looking forward to playing with the shiny things over there.

I'm a fan of keeping everything I've done together, for the sake of completeness, so for that reason alone I'd probably upload everything. It also means people can see everything you've done in one place, rather than having to hop between AO3 and LJ. But also as lar_laughs said, AO3 makes it much easier to save fic for later reading, so other people might appreciate having all your fics on there so they can read them at their convenience. You can always upload your most recent and favourites first, the others later.

With regards to rewriting/updating earlier fics, keep both versions on your LJ, post the new one to AO3 with a link to the old one? It's not something I've ever done (although quite a few of my earlier ones would be much better served by being rewritten) but that would be my thought.
inkvoicesinkvoices on August 2nd, 2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
*points up* lar_laughs said they have invites if you'd want to be on AO3 sooner :)

I'm looking forward to being able to use it to sort out and keep track of all the things I've been reading out there :D

Good points! The saving feature hadn't occurred to me and it is nice having everything together. I have everything together here on LJ and I still try to keep everything on ff.net, which is the only other archive site I use/d. Okay, well the plan is to upload the most recent, the longest, and the fics I actually like first and I think that'll take me some time to start with. Hmm, I suppose I could do a 'series' thing or chapters for the comment fics if I don't want lots of random little fics all over the show... *thinking cap on*

Yeah, I've never rewritten any of my fics before either. Someone asked me - can't remember where, but not so long ago - if i'd ever considered doing it and I guess it's been playing on my mind with a kind of 'new archive, new start' spring cleaning feeling.
Sproidflying_android on August 3rd, 2012 03:46 pm (UTC)
It is tempting to get involved with AO3 right now... but on the other hand I should probably not be distracting myself from the things I actually have to do any more. Thank you for pointing that out though :)

Your plan for uploads sounds very organised :D Use of a series/chapters function sounds like it could be very useful as well, for further collection and organisation. Lets people see which things are related as well, I suppose.

New archives, new starts are nice things. Writing new fic is fun, but sometimes it's nice to revisit old stories and let them know you haven't forgotten them ;) (Yes, I'm sentimental about old fics...)
inkvoicesinkvoices on August 4th, 2012 07:51 pm (UTC)
See, you're all sensible *grins*.

Yeah, at the moment I'm just adding a few at a time. I didn't realise how much I'd actually written :S

Heh, I'm sentimental about some of my old fics. Others I kind of pat them on the head and go, 'well, there was an idea in there somewere, bless' *grins*. Mind you, I'm very, very glad that my earliest fanfics are in notebooks but nowhere online :D
