avengers fans, are the extras I haven't seen worth it?
I’m supposed to be waiting for Christmas for the Avengers, which works since I’m currently broke and there were rumours that there might be a special version coming out by then in the UK, but those are apparently debunked. That’s a kick in the gut considering that in the UK not only does the DVD of the Avengers come with practically no extras at all, but Joss Whedon’s commentary has been taken off the Blu-ray (even if you pre-ordered it), the Coulson scene has been censored, and there’s still no Shawarma Scene. I’ve been trying to work out what my best option would be.

The Options:
1) the UK DVD. It’s cheap, it has the film on it!
2) the UK Blu-ray. It has most of the extras.
3) import a region free US Blu-ray with everything. (Amazon tells me that the UK Blu-ray is region free, but it says that the US Blu-ray is region specific. True or false?)

For me, I personally don’t own a Blu-ray player, but I could use a family one. Awkward, but do-able. Blu-ray also costs more and importing a Blu-ray even more than that. The thing is that I managed to catch a fair amount of the extras on the internet before they were taken down:
- the gag reel
- “A Visual Journey”
- Loki and Clint extended scene
- Bruce extended scene
- the extended Viaduct Fight
- Steve Rodgers – Man Out of Time
- the Maria Hill, Fury, and World Security Council alternate bits
- Item 47 (if that’s the one with the two folks in the car with ski-masks and alien weaponary?)
I have also seen blurry footage of the post-credits Shawarma scene that they won’t let us have in the UK. Whilst I object to the censorship of the Coulson scene on principal I’m not too fussed if I end up with the censored version. (I’m still peeved on principal that it’s called by the different title of ‘Avengers Assemble’ over here but I can live with it.) According to the table here of what the US gets I’m missing Second Screen, Assembling the Ultimate Team, a music video, and Joss Whedon’s commentary.

Am I missing anything else? Based on what I’ve already managed to see, is there any point in the extra expense of tracking down a Blu-ray with everything on it? Am I missing some really good things, or have I seen the best extras and should just sit back and rewatch the film?

If you want the US Blu-ray, I could buy it and ship it, which would probably be cheaper than getting amazon to do it; they have a $20 set at target that has the blue ray, extas, a dvd, a digital copy and the soundtrack.

Also there are ways to unlock your blu-ray player. Not that I know them or use them at work or anything.

It's not $20 at Target anymore. :( I wanted to get it for the 90-min special documentary (which is the same one OP can get at Sainsbury's in the UK), but it was a limited-time price and I was too late. I think both Target and Amazon are back up to ~$34.

Wow, that's generous, thank you! I hear they've changed the price though and I'm still not sure if the extras I haven't seen are worth the hassle. Plus at the moment I'd be looking at someone else to be getting it for me for Christmas :S THANK YOU though <3

Heh, it isn't my blu-ray player so I'll leave it be. Good to know you can do that though. I dislike technology being limiting or restrictive on principle.

I fully support sticking it to customs, I've had trades in the past with UKers where I send Kool-aid and Mac and cheese for Boots aspirin and Kindereggs.

What, Boots makes the best aspirin.

I can get behind that. And Boots pain killers too :D

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about the bonus features. I've actually been trying out what to get myself. What do you mean the Coulson scene was censored?
inkvoices: avengers:shawarmainkvoices on October 6th, 2012 04:44 pm (UTC)
Well I can tell you that of the extra's that I've seen the gag reel is brilliant and the extended scenes/man out of time/alternatives were very interesting.

In the UK - and some other places - Coulson's last scene is edited so that we don't see the spear tip (sorry, trying to be cagey because I know they're people on this thread that haven't seen the film). It isn't much and they've done it before on other films - the UK's version of the Hunger Games, for instance, is different to in the US with editing of similar scenes. It isn't a huge change, but censorship or different countries getting different versions makes me twitchy.

ah, that's pretty interesting. I had no idea that happened. thanks for telling me. :)

Edited after reading to the end of your post. :)

The Blu-rays, including US, are region free. However if you don't have a Blu-ray player, or can't get to one easily, that's of little use to you. The DVD from the U.S. set is region 1. I have a regular DVD player and a region-free one, so sometimes I order British DVDs. But if you don't have a region-free DVD player, the U.S. DVD will not be playable for you.

As for the extras, the only thing you really need to decide is how much you want to listen to Joss's commentary. That's really the only thing missing that's of note/value from the UK set. The other items are meh -- music video is fairly useless (you can see it on YouTube), here's more about Second Screen -- it's basically interactive content you can browse if you watch the movie on your computer, and the Assembling the Ultimate Team featurette was OK but only a few minutes long, nothing that was super great.

Yes, Item 47 is the Marvel One Shot "short" that you're thinking of, with Lizzie Caplan, Jesse Bradford, and Titus Welliver.

Target here, and Sainsbury's where you are, carry an exclusive 90-minute documentary about the making of the movie or whatever -- I haven't seen it myself. From what I've read, 50% of people say it's crap, 50% of people say it's good. So, I dunno. But it's another consideration.

The shawarma scene *is* at the end of the credits for at least the UK Blu-ray, from what I've read -- not sure about the UK DVD.

Hope that helps!

That's interesting, because amazon keeps telling me that they're region specific *head desk*. No, I don't have a blu-ray player or a region-free DVD player. Whenever I next update my tech I'm going to have to look into that. It hasn't been an issue for me before really, but recently I wanted The Unusuals, which isn't released over here and I ended up having to get as region one and rip it onto my laptop, which can only change regions a certain number of times. (I've been told that I can make it so that I can change regions more times, but I'm nervous about playing with that.)

Hmm, the profiles from the Second Screen might be worth a look, but I've been spoilt by the internet - I've already seen some 'classified' files and stuff online *grins* and I have hope that people will share the juicy things anyway *fingers crossed*. What did you think of the commentary, if you've listened to it? I'm not a huge commentary watcher - I've listened to a few on Firefly episodes, the Serenity commentary, and the Lord of the Rings actors commentaries (for the laughs, heh) and that's it.

Huh. Thanks for the Sainsbury's heads up. Why they, of all people, have an exclusive I can't fathom. And thank goodness we get shawarma finally, even if it does end up being blu-ray only.

More help than not, thanking you :D

Well, you're looking at Amazon.com, right? The U.S. site doesn't assume that anyone cares about the region coding outside the U.S. However if you go to Blu-ray expert sites, or read Amazon.co.uk comments, many have confirmed that the Blu-ray is region free (and that Disney hasn't released a region-coded Blu-ray in the last 2 years). And the box itself does say Region A, B, C. I forgot to mention -- Disney UK's official response is that hardcore viewers who really want the commentary should just buy the U.S. version, which their spokesperson confirmed was region free. So. Yeah. Don't think there's any doubt about it.

Since I replied last, I've seen several people comment that the shawarma scene *is* on the UK DVD. I don't think that's been left out of any of the regions' home releases.

Yes, true re: changing a DVD drive to change regions only a limited number of times. I don't blame you for being wary of trying it again. You almost have to have a drive dedicated to a specific region so that that's not an issue.

As for Sainsbury's, that's probably easy to decipher, lol. Either they have some kind of affiliation with Disney, or they worked out some kind of attractive deal wherein they get a smaller cut of the profits, but hope to make that up by more people buying it from them than they otherwise would.

Here were my thoughts about Joss's commentary, but they are pretty much limited to Jeremy/Scarlett/BW/HE. Like you, I don't normally listen to commentaries, but Joss is always amusing, and this was one where I felt like I did want to hear it. I didn't feel like my world had changed for the better because I listened to it (in fact, if you read what I said, it's the opposite!), but your mileage may vary.

Shawarma scene, oh how I love you *grins*. Glad we get that!

Yes, but Sainsbury's of all places *shrugs*. They're not know for DVDs or things like this, or for having much marketting savvy at all to be honest.

Hmm, not encouraging on the commentary front.

THANK YOU for all of this <3

Sorry. Can't help with the extras stuff. I still haven't seen the movie yet but I'm really sick of them doing so many different versions. I'm a sucker for extras and will buy from overseas to get dvds with the good extras. Thing is these days they're putting most of the extras on blue rays which I don't have a player.
We've bought a bunch of things in blueray or the triple play sets that have blueray/dvd/digital versions.
We got R's brother to rip the extras from the blue ray so we can watch them on the computer but it is time consuming and takes up loads of disk space.

What is worse is that they are putting some things on one version and others on a different one. We have two copies of XMFC because they decided to add bonus material to one without many other extras and so we had to get both.
That and the really good outtakes are only on the blue ray.

I can't afford to keep buying many copies. I think I'll have to just buy a good copy and then download the extras.

Also why would they take off the commentary?
I get pissed off when movies don't make a commentary. I can't see why they would record one and then not put it on.
That sucks.

It's a very fun movie :D

I know what you mean. It shouldn't be so difficult to be a customer/consumer *sigh* and I dislike this move that seems to be happening of extras going to blu-rays only. Just because I want to buy DVDs which are cheaper doesn't mean that I wouldn't be willing to spend a bit more for DVDs with extras, it means that I don't have and can't buy a blu-ray player and think that blu-ray discs are too expensive. And a lot of my DVDs were presents off family who don't really pay attention to extras. What was the XMFC bonus material? Because that's one I only have a basic copy of.

Apparently the Avengers commentary wasn't ready in time for the UK release date and to release another copy with the commentary and expecting people to buy two copies would be mean, or something. We would have waited :S And telling people that the blu-ray they had pre-ordered had the commentary on it and then not delivering? Bad customer service.

Hi, just stumbled in here and thought I might be able to help with the Region Free thingy on your DVD-player :)

If you know the make and model of your DVD player, just go to the serch engine of your choice, enter make and model + code free and you will get a bunch of sites showing you how to disable the region code in your player. Worked for me every time I got a new player :) And you won't have to worry about the player in you PC.
